Communication & Core skills lab

"Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.” – Rita Mae Brown

Good communication skills are indispensable for the success of any professional. The English language, in particular, has become essential in the lives of young people who aspire to advance their careers anywhere in the world. Language learning is not the same as learning any other subject. It is not confined to writing an examination and getting a degree or award. The four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking have to be practiced. Being able to communicate well is the most important factor when seeking a placement in a company or institution. Communication involves one’s ability to listen carefully so as to grasp the meaning and to respond in turn with apt words and clarity of pronunciation. The language laboratory plays an important role in this process.

Foreign Languages

As the world shrinks and businesses grow and expand to new regions and countries, academic institutions have come to realise that people who speak multiple languages have a major competitive advantage. Having just a degree is no longer cool. Multilingualism adds another weapon to the students’ arsenal as they considerably improve their chance of getting placed in a multi-national company with cross-border operations. It is not necessary that students need to be fluent in all the languages. Even a rudimentary knowledge puts across the message that they are putting in an effort to understand another language and their culture. This makes the client happy and helps in building a strong customer relationship.

According to, people can earn five to 20 percent more if they can speak an additional language. The business landscape is changing at a much faster pace than expected, which gives more opportunities to those who know more than one language. Indian companies, as well as companies having operations in the country, have started evaluating their employees on their foreign language proficiencies. Multilingual employees often earn more money as their role in the company is greater and they are in a better position to meet foreign clients and handle important projects. It increases their chance of being part of strategic global projects.

According to the CBI-Pearson Education and Skills Survey 2015, 45 percent of respondents saw foreign language skills as beneficial to a business. Around 36 percent recognized language skills among employees as helpful in building relations with overseas suppliers, customers, and other contacts. Languages can also help individuals in developing their careers: 26 percent said language skills assist staff mobility within the organization, facilitating international working.

Which are the most sought after languages

Employers are looking for MBA grads who are fluent in European languages such as French, Spanish, and German. Spanish is especially popular as Spanish-speaking emerging economies in Central and South America are experiencing solid growth, opening up trade and investment opportunities. We all know that China has become a global economic power to reckon with, presenting seemingly limitless business opportunities. That’s why Mandarin and Cantonese, while tough to learn, are inching up the charts.

There is no particular career where being multilingual helps the most. In a global village where jobs are cross-country and cross-functional, knowing more than one language will help increase career prospects

Globalization is a reality and, through technology, business leaders are managing businesses remotely. A person speaking their language is trusted more by foreign investors and partners. It is critical to understanding different cultures, which in turn is necessary for managing relationships in international business.

Research says that multi-lingual people tend to have a more logical and rational thought process as compared to monolinguals. Learning a foreign language also helps people filter out irrelevant and unnecessary information and help them focus only on important details. Multilingual is apparently good at spotting misleading information, especially in documents and paperwork thereby, helping them avoid any kind of business crisis.
